Porterhouse Cake Co. is a Leeds-based bakery, specialising in small batch cakes, pastries and sweet treats for cafes, private events, weddings and birthdays. Since 2017, we have supplied cakes to cafes across Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area – you might have bitten into one of our brownies or enjoyed a slice of our cake at Stage Espresso, Archive, Workshop, Laynes Espresso, Corner Cup, Keepers, Muddy Boots, Hoxton North or The Temperance Movement.

Back in 2019, we ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a commercial unit in Armley, and our team grew from one to two. Now, we do many weddings and countless birthdays a year, as well as a range of selection boxes for events like Easter, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. We also open our premises once a month for pop-up events, where you can enjoy warm pastries straight from the oven, bagels, and a range of desserts and cakes. We even partner with Echelon Coffee so you can have a drink with your breakfast!

"To be honest, it all began with my Auntie Jane's profiteroles, a regular treat when we were growing up. I always thought they were a work of magic. Years later I gave them a try myself - nothing beats the satisfaction of creating something so delicious from a handful of basic ingredients, I was hooked!

Baking developed from hobby to obsession until when I came into some inheritance money and was working an admin job in a law firm that didn't suit me, I decided to renovate my home kitchen and give baking professionally a go. Looking back it seems a bit crazy - I am completely self-taught and I'm learning on the job all the time.

I started supplying small orders to one café, and interest grew until the home kitchen wasn’t big enough anymore. Before I knew it, I was running a Kickstarter campaign, moving into commercial premises and employing a second baker! I’m not going to say it’s been easy, but it has been, for the most part, extremely rewarding getting to create things with my hands all day everyday"

"For as long as I can remember, I have loved food. When I was little I would eat almost anything put in front of me and my parents taught me the importance of cooking good food. For me there is nothing better than getting your mates round and cooking a huge meal: it's my happy place.

I came to the food industry after finishing a degree in Music and a string of random jobs. It had never occurred to me that I could convert my passion into a viable career. After working for a while as a chef I decided I wanted to specialise, so enrolled in a 'Patisserie and Professional Confectionery' course.

I met Liz after attending one of her doughnut and beer pairing events with my fellow baking pal Gem. When the job came up at Porterhouse I immediately knew it was the sort of place I wanted to work. For me, being in an environment where I am not only supported, but able to contribute, create and flourish is endlessly rewarding. I'm really excited to see what the future holds"
